Marketing · Community · Growth engineering

Engineer whoships growth.

For ten years I’ve worked at the seam of technology, product and marketing — never one without the others. I build the data, content and community systems that move high-ticket buyers from curious to committed.

Approach

What I actually do on a marketing team

Five things, and the reason each one is worth having an engineer on the marketing side of the house.

  • 01

    Community & audience

A high-ticket purchase is a long conversation. I’ve built and run the platforms where those conversations happen — live chat, gamification, moderation, virtual events — for audiences in the thousands. I know what keeps a room warm in the months between campaigns.

  • 02

    Content & campaigns

I’ve built the content engine and the campaign layer sitting on top of it: capture, segment, personalise, measure. A message written for one specific person outperforms a message written for everyone, every time — the hard part is knowing which person.

  • 03

    Marketing data & ops

Funnels, cohorts, attribution, dashboards. I came into marketing from data engineering, so when someone asks whether a campaign worked, I can open the data and answer today rather than queue a request.

  • 04

    AI, used properly

An MSc in AI and a daily working practice: research assistants, content pipelines, recommendation and personalisation. Not AI as decoration — AI at the specific point where a bottleneck is costing the team hours every week.

  • 05

    Support as retention

At a high ticket, support is marketing. Every answer either compounds trust or quietly leaks it. I’ve built the tooling support teams live in, and I’ve sat close enough to the people using it to know that response time is a brand attribute.

Selected work

Where tech, product and marketing met

Five projects that explain the pattern better than a job title does.

01

StartSe

Back-end Developer → Partner

2017 — 2021 · São Paulo

  • Data
  • Personalisation
  • Lifecycle marketing

Context

StartSe sells executive education to senior leaders: a high-ticket, high-consideration product where one decision takes months and involves several people. Content was the top of the funnel — but nobody knew which content led to which sale.

What I did

  • Built the data capture layer that turned anonymous content consumption into a usable profile of a real buyer.
  • Designed and shipped the content recommendation system in Python — ElasticSearch for the recommendations, MongoDB for user data, served through a TypeScript/Node API into the React front end.
  • Handed those profiles to marketing so campaigns could be tailored per segment instead of blasted at the whole base.

02

StartSe

Digital events platform

2020 · The pandemic pivot

  • Community
  • Live events
  • Engagement

Context

The business was face-to-face conferences. In March 2020 that stopped overnight, and an audience that paid to be in a room together had nowhere to go.

What I did

  • Led the technical design and development of a digital events platform — TypeScript, Node.js, React, deployed on AWS.
  • Shipped the features that make a virtual room feel like a room: live chat, gamification, and an interactive 3D map of the venue.
  • Held thousands of attendees live and simultaneous without the experience degrading.

03

Emotize

Partner — AI & Marketing

Current · a few hours a week

  • AI
  • Positioning
  • Brand voice
emotize.com.br

Context

Emotize is building what it calls Brazil’s most complete emotional-health ecosystem: a consumer app, a corporate platform for psychosocial risk compliance, in-person experiences, and Tizee, its own AI. It is a category most companies are uncomfortable marketing.

What I did

  • Lead the AI and marketing side as a partner — how the product speaks, and where AI genuinely assists rather than performs.
  • Work on positioning and brand voice for a subject people are embarrassed to need, which is a marketing problem before it is a product one.
04

Dinheiro Esperto

Personal project — product, content, distribution

Ongoing · free, and staying free

  • Content
  • Gamification
  • Retention
dinheiroesperto.ai

Context

A free, gamified platform that teaches personal finance in real Brazilian terms — salaries, utility bills, Pix — in lessons of three to five minutes, with an AI assistant and free tools for teachers.

What I did

  • Own the whole loop: product, content, and getting it in front of people.
  • Use it as the place I test what actually makes someone come back — short lessons, weekly competition, a reason to open it on a Tuesday.

Zartis

Senior Software Engineer & AI consultant

Current · Ireland, remote

  • AI consulting
  • Engineering

Context

Senior engineering and AI/tech consulting for an Irish software firm, contracted through my own company, Turing Tech.

What I did

  • Consult on AI adoption: where it belongs in a product, where it does not, and what it costs to run.
  • Ship production software in Go, Node.js, TypeScript and React on AWS.

Track record

The engineering half

Delivered through Accenture UK & Ireland and Infinity Works, for clients whose buyers do not make impulse decisions either.

Monzo Bank
Metrics and alerting for microservices in Go, with the data analysis behind every threshold — so the alert that wakes someone at 3am is one that deserves to.
AVIVA
Insurance renewal platform built from scratch in six months — Go, React, TypeScript, AWS — on one of the hardest projects in the account.
Convex Insurance
Tech lead for four developers. Parallel large-file downloader on Step Functions, plus a local Lambda test environment that gave the team its afternoons back.
Entain
Cloud landing zone with AWS AFT and Cloud WAN in Terraform. Designed central services and the infrastructure testing pipeline; led regional expansion to Brazil and Milan.
Wood Mackenzie
Large-scale data handling in TypeScript and React, and the refactor that made a significant legacy codebase safe to change again.

About

The short version

I’m a computer scientist who never got to only do computer science — and at some point I stopped treating that as a problem.

Everywhere I’ve worked, the interesting question sat between three teams. At StartSe it was “why do the people who read this never buy that”. At Accenture it was “what threshold is actually worth waking someone up for”. At Emotize it’s “how do you market something people are embarrassed to need”. None of those are engineering questions. All of them are answered with engineering.

That’s the whole pitch: I can build the thing, measure the thing, and write the sentence that sells it. Ten years, clients across the UK, Ireland and Brazil, one consistent habit.

Today my week is split between senior engineering at Zartis — through my own company, Turing Tech — AI and marketing as a partner at Emotize, and a free financial-literacy project I run because I think it matters. I’m looking for part-time marketing, community and support work where a high ticket and a long, careful sales conversation are the point rather than the obstacle.
